UDS Makes African University Football History With Back-to-Back FASU Titles
The University for Development Studies (UDS) has made African university football history after successfully defending its All-Africa University Games football championship, defeating Julius Nyerere University of Guinea 2–1 after extra time in the final in Cairo, Egypt.
The victory on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, makes UDS the first university in the history of African university football to win the continental championship in consecutive editions. The Tamale-based institution entered the competition as defending champions after winning the previous edition in Lagos, Nigeria.
A Hard-Fought Final
UDS faced a determined Julius Nyerere University side in a closely contested final that remained goalless at half-time.
The Ghanaian champions eventually broke the deadlock in the second half when Abdul Raphui reacted quickest to a parried effort from Akusaayela Nuhu and headed UDS into the lead.
Julius Nyerere University responded in the 70th minute to level the contest, forcing the match into extra time after both sides failed to find a winner in regulation time.
With the championship still undecided, Ezedeen Alhassan produced the decisive moment five minutes into the second half of extra time, curling a free-kick into the top-left corner to give UDS a 2–1 lead.
The Ghanaian side held on through the closing stages to retain the title.
Dominant Campaign in Cairo
UDS had already demonstrated its strength throughout the tournament before reaching the final.
The defending champions began their campaign with a 1–1 draw against the University of Hertfordshire before progressing through the competition with increasingly commanding performances.
They defeated the University of Hertfordshire 4–1 to finish top of Group B and then produced an emphatic 4–0 victory over Egypt's Delta University in the semi-final to secure their place in the final for a second consecutive edition.
The semi-final victory took UDS' tournament tally to nine goals scored and only two conceded at that stage, underlining the team's attacking strength and defensive organisation.
From African Champions to World Champions
The latest triumph adds another chapter to an extraordinary rise for UDS football.
In 2025, UDS became the first African university to win the FISU World University Football Championship, defeating defending champions Paulista University of Brazil 2–1 after extra time in Dalian, China. Ezedeen Alhassan scored the winning goal in the 121st minute.
That global triumph established UDS as the first African institution to capture the FISU world university football title.
The university has now followed that achievement with consecutive African titles, further strengthening its record on the continental stage.
According to UDS, the latest victory means the institution currently holds three major university football titles simultaneously: the World University Football Championship, the African University Football Championship and the West African University Football Championship.
